Glutathione or GSH is a protein molecule that is naturally produced by the human body. Its presence was recognized as a powerful antioxidant back in 1889. It wasn’t until 30 years ago when researchers and scientists began to study its effects and functions within the body for continued good health. Glutathione is called the “mother of all antioxidants.” Its existence is related to preventing many different illnesses and diseases, including:

GSH is made up of 3 amino acids: cysteine, glutamate, and glycine.

The human brain requires an oxidation system and an anioxidant defense system, which is provided through glutathione contents. Protein also nourishes the brain which is furnished by GSH cells. Glutamate is a helpful protein molecule for the brain.

(c) glycine is naturally produced in the body and it is one of the building blocks for glutathione. Glycine helps GSH to produce hormones that are boosting enzymes for the body’s immune system.

Glutathione is normally recycled around the body until it is blocked by a toxic overload of free radicals, like mercury and other harmful heavy metals. How we live and what we eat, can deplete this vitally important molecule. Things like a poor diet, stress, pollution, toxins, medications, trauma, infections and consistent radiation all decreases the ability for glutathione to exist.

The free radicals that exist either due to an external environment or what may be created by our bodies, are constantly attacking and stealing the body’s DNA molecular cells that gives us good health. If a molecule loses its energy or an electron, can turn into a free radical and begin attacking. This is repeated until the cells die or mutate, which is what can cause cancer. The powerful glutathione molecule begins its work to repair the DNA cells.

This is why it is important to keep glutathione molecules multiplying and strong. Also, GSH never becomes a free radical and it can recycle itself to support other antioxidants. Through the body’s oxidation process, glutathione produces a co-enzyme which recycles GSH. Thus, if a person is GSH deficient, it lowers the body’s defense against the free radicals.

GSH is the protector of the body’s immune system and functions as an antioxidant within the system, from children to senior citizens. Glutathione can become deficient which causes different problems. If we are smokers or we don’t get a daily dose of vitamins, minerals, and proteins, GSH can lead to a deficiency, whose symptoms include the following:

• rashes• headaches• dizziness• joint pain• dulling of memory• frequent colds or viruses• sleep disorders• dry skin• lack of energy• depression and other symptoms

Are there methods available to increase our body’s GSH levels? The answer is yes, even though research is still ongoing. Other methods for boosting and increasing glutathione, includes oral supplements, injections, inhalant, or skin patches. The herbal supplement “milk thistle” is another beneficial product to help increase GSH. Milk thistle or silymarin, helps the liver to regenerate cells because the liver has the highest concentration of glutathione and its purpose is to detoxify the body. The potent enzymes of milk thistle boosts GSH levels, but do to the potency of this supplement, it should be taken under a doctor’s care.

Added supplements that increases glutathione levels, are N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC). NAC is used in medical offices to treat allergies, memory loss, and Parkinson’s disease. Alpha lipoic acid enhances the detoxification conditions within GSH cells. The alpha lipoic acid is also used to treat hepatitis and certain liver diseases.
